Back in 1971 Ram Dass teamed up with his friend Steve Durkee to illustrate what would become his most well-known book, "Be Here Now". But even before then, Durkee was a well-known artist, expressing his spiritual and psychedelic experiences through oil painting, block print and other more experimental mediums. His journey ultimately took him away from the visual arts, founding the Lama Foundation in New Mexico and eventually becoming a renowned scholar and leader within Sufi Islam.

This particular print is from a piece of art I have in my office, signed by Durkee himself in 1963. I love the counterintuitive symbolism of the attacking tiger--a sign of imminent death--and the word 'SALVATION', which I take as a message that salvation--enlightenment, ego-death, transcendence--is inherently violent, often destroying some of those things that we hold most dear.  This is scanned from my original etching on rives paper.
